The Leica Year

One Leica. One Lens. One Film. One Year.

My name is Sean. I am an amateur film photographer that lives in Seattle.

Inspired by this article and My Leica Year photoblog I decided to start this project. My photoblog here will track my progress along the way. I'll be using my Leica M4 with a 50/2 Dual Range Summicron. For film choice, I'll be shooting with Fomapan 400.

In Week #22 I found myself in a bit of a pickle. I opened my drawer where I store my rolls of Fomapan and realized that I was all out. Ok, not a big problem except that I was low on cash. I couldn’t afford to buy any rolls until I got paid the following week. I didn’t want to go another week without shooting anything so I searched my room for any other rolls of film I might have to use. All I came up with was a roll of Kodak Porta 800. I had only shot 11 photos before I took out the roll and started my Leica project. With this being my only choice, I put the roll into the M4 and finished it off.

So, I give you a week of color!

The night I took this picture of Maria, I was in a sour mood. The month of February does that to me. If it isn’t Valentine’s Day that makes me feel lonely, then it’s my birthday that has me contemplating my life choices and if they were right. In any case, I needed something to cheer me up, at least for a little while. So I went for a walk around my neighborhood.
I stopped by the Dutch Bike Co. cause the make a pretty decent cup of hot chocolate. Behind the counter Maria was working and she greeted me with a sweet, friendly smile. She had 90mins to go before she could close up shop, and the place was empty. She asked me to hang out and keep her company. I obliged.
We talked about life before cellphones (which she took the chance to call me an “old man” cause I’ve used a rotary phone in my lifetime), relationships, stalkers and compared crazy bus stories. All in all, we talked about nothing serious and I think that was what I needed. Some time to step away from myself and not worry about things so much.
Before I left, Maria asked if I had my camera with me. Of course I did. She reminded me that I said I wanted to take some pictures of her. So I took a four shots. This was the last one. I think this will help me get through to the rest of the month.
